My life has been frantic in the last few months and as a result my blog has suffered. This is something that I will rectify over the summer holidays which started today.

Many great things has happened in my life since I last posted and I will try to fill you in now...

(1) On the 31st October I raced in K2. For those of you who haven't been to the Coromandel I will try my best to describe the race. K2 is a 200km cycle race over some of the biggest, longest and steepest hills in NZ.

Some what similar to La Mammott in France but not as high.

I planned to treat this as a long training ride...however I got myself into a bunch that was riding a bit faster than I would have liked. Naturally I was dropped on the first climb until another bunch picked me up. This continued to happen on most of the climbs. I took advantage of all of the drink stops which were conveniently half way up all of the hills. At 140km my back was causing quite a bit of pain so I stopped a few times to stretch it. As you can see from the results I wasn't too fast and all I can say is...giraffes just aren't meant to ride up mountains. I completed the race in 8.36hours and got 14th in 23 - 39year age group. Then I ate McDonalds.

(2) I raced in the Hutt Triathlon on 7th November...this was a short and fast race. I was still a bit sore from K2 but entered this race because some of my work colleagues were doing it as a team. I came 3rd overall female behind Katie Fenton (a very fast track runner now triathlete) and Sarah Gardiner (who just raced at World Triathlon Champs in Hungary). My time was 16.25min (4km run), 34.11mins (18km cycle) and 6.17mins (300m pool swim).

(3) The following weekend was quite intense...Saturday was a brick - 150km cycle/10km run (hilly). Sunday I raced in the Scorching Triathlon - Swim 1000m, cycle 130km and run 8km. This was closed to my distance than the Hutt Triathlon but after Saturdays training I was starting tired so not ideal. I surprised myself and finished 13th female and 4th in 30 - 34year age group. My times were 20.25mins - swim, 1.06.31hours - cycle and 37.49mins - run = 2.04.45hours total time.

(4) The Splash and Dash series started on 1st December at Freyburg Beach. I decided to race the shorter distances without a wetsuit and this proved to be a good decision. I came 2nd in the 30 - 39year age group 1.14mins behind Pip Parkin. My times were 15.14mins - 730 swim and 13.04mins - 3km run = 28.18mins. Still need to get faster though because I was only 14th female to finish.

(5) My first important race of the season was IRONMAORI. It was important because I'm Maori and I wanted to show other Maori Wahine that we can do endurance events with the best of them. Ironmaori is a half ironman distance race run by Heather Shipworth and Missy Mackey from Ngati Kahunganu aimed specifically, but not exclusively, at Maori and Pacific Island people.

I forgot my wetsuit so I had no choice but to swim without a wetsuit...which was no0t really what I wanted to do but I'm happy with the result anyway as I was 8th fastest in the swim. I had a solid cycle but was surprised with the amount of hills as I thought it was a flat course. My cycle time was 3rd fastest and I felt strong into the wind thanks to all that training at home (Wellington). I ran hard and was delighted to have the 2nd fastest run time on the day. My times were: 37.04mins - 2km swim, 2.55.34hour - 90km cycle and 1.48.07hours 21.1km run = 5.20.45hours. I was 3rd in the Open Womens grade, 4th overall female and 1st Ngati Kahunganu wahine! This event had the best and most supportive atmosphere I ever experienced. My husband Mark was 3rd in the Open Mens grade but I'd like to point out that I beat him by 12mins.

(6) Wednesday 15th December was another great day at the races for me. I raced in the second Splash and Dash event of the season. The distances were the same as the first event, 730m swim and 3km run. Again I raced without a wetsuit and managed to go even faster. My time was 15.03mins - 730m swim,12.46mins - 3km run = 27.49mins. I came 1st in the 30-39 year age group and 9th female overall. I won a container of Horleys Replace (my favourite) and then I even won a spot prize ($40 voucher for T3). I will be visiting Fiona at T3 on Monday to buy a new wetsuit...one that fits me properly and makes me swim faster.

(7) I finished teaching at Hutt Central School yesterday (Thursday 16th December) and I will truly miss all of the lovely students I have taught, coached and spent time with. I was sad to be leaving my 25 talented kids but I know I will be seeing them in the near future. While there are some things I won't miss, it was a good year and a lot of things were accomplished. I'd like to thank the parents who took the time to tell me about the difference I've made in their child's lives.

(8) My HbA1c results are back...I have been making good but slow progress with this. October - 8.6%, November - 8.5% and December - 8.2%. It can only get better and I will be trying to get that number down to the low 7's by March next year.

I have a long, hard summer of training ahead of me and I will keep you up to date on all of the training, racing and diabetes.
