Magical Breakfast

I am pleased to say that I am currently 8

weeks, 5 days along in this pregnancy and am starting to see some relief in the morning 24×7 sickness that has been hitting me pretty hard and steady the past few weeks. It’s now kind of a hit and miss, come and go kind of thing, not a constant ickiness. So, even though it’s not gone completely, I’m SO glad that it’s better than before. I’m actually starting to enjoy food again because I want to, not shoveling it in because I’m low and praying it doesn’t return in the trash can beside me.

Since the ickiness has kinda died down some, I now have to try to eat things that won’t (1) make me sick again and (2) spike my blood sugar. Most fruits will spike me, but seeing as how that is mostly what I’ve been craving lately (especially oranges and tangerines), I’m trying to find ways to offset the spike.

One fruit that I used to love to eat but just never picked up again were prunes. Yes, prunes. I know most of you are probably saying “EWWW” or laughing because it’s usually deemed an old person’s food to aide in certain bathroom activities, but I have always loved eating them and they really haven’t ever had an adverse affect on me.

Yesterday morning, I ate my little snack bowl with my 8 prunes for breakfast (5g carb each, so 40g carb breakfast) and did not see a spike at all. Now, I know these little things are packed with protein and fiber, but I didn’t realize they would react so perfectly with my blood sugars. I thought it may have been a fluke, so I ate them again this morning and I have yet to see a spike on my CGM.

I can’t help but wonder, is this some magical breakfast food I should have known about years ago or is it just the pregnancy reacting nicely to an old food friend? Is this going to be one of those foods that I can bolus perfectly for now and two months, or two weeks even, from now I’ll be marking it off my list of “okay foods” because of my fluctuating hormones and insulin needs? I guess only time will tell.

Any of you previously PWWD’s (pregnant women with diabetes) had some miracle food during your pregnancy that barely impacted blood sugars? Please share. I’d love to hear (as would some of my other PWWD followers)!!
