Today is my 18th Diabetes Birthday...I remember being really tired, drinking loads of water and urinating frequently. I'd been rapidly loosing muscle and fat over a 3 week period and my running times were definitely getting slower. I was not enjoying training and my kidneys were sore (although I thought it was just a sore stomach). My friends told me after that I looked anorexic but no-one said anything to me at the time. My parents took me to my sports doctor on Christmas Day. The doctor took blood and sent me home. We
got a phone call a couple of hours later and my parents were told I definitely had type one Diabetes. What happened next was funny for me...both of my parents were really sad and cried but no-one told me what Diabetes was. I'd never known a person with Diabetes and definitely didn't know the significance of this disease. We got ourselves sorted and went off to the hospital for a lesson on 'how to be a diabetic'. I was a pretty determined 14year old and told the diabetic nurse that there was no way that I would be staying overnight so they had a couple of hours to teach me everything because I wanted to race in the New Years Eve track meet in Tauranga. I felt almost immediately better after my first injection and I had no problems using my needles and finger prickers. There was a sense of relief that there was a reason for my decline in athletic performance over the last 3 weeks but at the same time, disappointment due to the fact that I'd have to take some time off running to get my health sorted. There was no doubt in my mind that I would ever run again so I knew there would be a light at the end of the tunnel. My training at the hospital was brief but thorough. So that's what happened 18 years ago today. Thank you to my husband for buying me such a lovely birthday present.
