Imagine...
Common' project yourself, your life, your existence... Into our day-in-the-life. Imagine a day in the life where your diligence is depended upon for your child's daily survival and longevity. This is a responsibility of all parents in essence. However, parenting a type 1 child flaunts the fragility of your child's well being and the question of their longevity in your face daily. This is what my life entails. Imagine a life in which lancing your child's finger (yes, this includes a needle and blood) eight or more times a day was needed for their "basic" care along with food, water, shelter, and clothing. Imagine that an injectible (another needle) hormone, insulin, is dispensed each time your child eats or when their blood sugar is elevated in order for them to live. Furthermore, imagine that without this injectible medication that your child would die (yep, death).
Unfortunately, this is my reality. While I am glad there is insulin and so many technological advances to manage type 1 diabetes more effectively... this is a difficult life. Imagine being questioned about the food you are feeding your child while you are out in public. Pizza, cotton candy, french fries, ice cream, and hamburgers... staple foods for some... not for us, and when we consume these foods, or try to let our children be "children" by experiencing them, we are questioned and ultimately judged by some that do not fully understand the management of type 1 Diabetes. Guess what? I have been questioned, time and time again. Imagine your life as it was when you brought your newborn infant into your home and sleep was an "old friend". Where you slept in two, three, or, if you were lucky four hour shifts. This is continually our lives. We live in two to three to four hour increments daily and nightly. We have been doing this for several years. We are tired.
