Today was the follow-up exam at Dr. H’s office for my eyes. The swelling of my corneas had gone down to where we could do an eye exam, and it turned out to be better than my last. Good news! So, I asked him about the eye picture and if everything looked okay verses last year.
“There was some spots on there, but nothing to worry about. You said you had one done here last year?” Yes “Okay then, let me go check something and I’ll be right back.” So, off he went to compare this years to last. I waited… and waited.. he passed by, and came back by and stuck his head in the door and said it would be just a minute longer, and that he was having his assistant help him. Then, his assistant cam and got me. I instantly had a feeling of “uh oh”. So, he showed me the screen and compared last year’s picture. Last year, I had a few spots on my right eye. Drusa or drusen is the official name he called them. They were to the left of the retina, and not many of them there. This year, the ones from the left side were gone, but I had more spots (about twice as many, but still not a lot) on the right side of the retina. He said what is confusing to him is that (1) they usually only show up in the older population, usually around age 60, and (2) the old ones were gone and there were new ones. So, this leads him to believe that I have a slow metabolism and that the eye just hasn’t absorbed them as fast as a “normal” eye would (to which he blamed the slower metabolism on the pregnancy or diabetes, so take your pick). So, that’s sort-of good news, right? Now, I have to go back in May to have my eyes re-photographed to make sure the drusen are clearing up and not getting worse. I’m praying they’ll be better.
