Here We Go Again: Celiac, maybe |

I had my annual labs done at my endo appointment on Tuesday. Dr. N told me that she wanted to check me for celiac this time around and we would do that every two years if it came back normal. I had a flashback to two years ago, shortly after my diagnosis, when we did the celiac test and it came back "abnormal." I remember when C, Dr. N's secretary, called me with that news. She had the "I've got bad news" tone of voice but said not to worry yet, my results had to be sent to Dr. F,
the gastroenterologist in her office and he would give the ruling as to whether or not further investigation was warranted and I should hear back within the week. I'm not good at waiting, am equally bad about not worrying, and have a compulsive need to be prepared for all contingencies, so I hopped online to see what I should expect in the event Dr. F's ultimate ruling was that I had Celiac. As I read, I grew more and more pissed because I was still getting my arms around the whole diabetes thing and making THOSE lifestyle changes and now there may be another "food challenge" thrown at me. I'll be honest, what really set me off was the thought of not being able to eat pizza. See, when I was first diagnosed, I was on a sliding scale and only allowed 45 carbs per meal. So, I could have a slice of pizza, sure, but who eats just one slice? Dr. N had just started me on carb counting, so pizza had returned to my world in a most glorious fashion and now Celiac was going to kill it again??? FFS. I was in major snit for entire wait. But, after about a week, Dr. N called me to let me know Dr. F said my results did not warrant further investigation and I did not have Celiac. She went on to tell me that Dr. F had scolded her for even using that particular lab test as it was outdated. So, I escaped unscathed back in 2009. Well, yesterday C called me with my lab results from Tuesday. Once again, I could tell by her voice that there was going to be something wrong in my labs. She led with the good news, cholesterol is fine, urine is clear (I found that an odd choice of words, but whatever), but...my Celiac test was abnormal. Same routine as last time, the results will go to Dr. F and they'd get back to me. I think she expected a negative reaction of some variety because when I breezily said "Oh yeah, we've gone down this road once before, just let me know what Dr. F says," she was surprised. Initially, I wasn't worried about it but true to form, as time passes, I get a little more concerned so this morning I duplicated my web research from 2 years ago and, the pizza thing aside, I think I can handle this better now than I could have back then. One of the things I've read is how whole foods that you prepare yourself are less likely to contain gluten and the other thing was on the importance of reading ingredient labels. The self-prepared whole foods dovetails nicely into my "cooking real food" plan for 2011 and I've been reading ingredient labels more and more lately, so I feel better equipped to deal with Celiac if indeed it becomes my reality. If anyone has any tips/advice while I wait for the final verdict, I'd appreciate it!
